Guna Milan Explained: The 36-Point Compatibility System Behind Every Katha Match

Ashtakoota Guna Milan is a 3,000-year-old system for assessing compatibility between two birth charts. Here's how each of the 8 Kootas works, and what your score actually tells you.

What is Guna Milan?

Guna Milan, also called Ashtakoota Milan, is the traditional Vedic system for assessing the compatibility of two people before marriage. "Ashta" means eight, "koota" means category, and "milan" means meeting or matching. Together, the eight categories generate a score out of a maximum of 36 points.

This system has been used by Hindu families for millennia, and it remains one of the most detailed and systematic approaches to compatibility assessment in any culture. It's not based on sun signs or personality quizzes. It's derived from the precise position of the Moon at the moment of each person's birth, determining their Janma Nakshatra (birth star) and Rashi (moon sign).

How the scoring works

Each of the 8 Kootas carries a different maximum point value, weighted by its significance. A perfect score across all Kootas is 36. In practice, a score of 18 or above is generally considered acceptable, 24 and above is good, and 28 and above is considered highly compatible.

The 8 Kootas in detail

1

Varna

Spiritual compatibility and ego levels. Represents the four Varnas (Brahmin, Kshatriya, Vaishya, Shudra) mapped to the 12 moon signs. A higher Varna partner ideally matches or complements a lower one.

2

Vashya

The power dynamic and mutual attraction between partners. Divided into 5 types (Manav, Chatushpad, Jalachara, Vanachara, Keeta), it assesses how naturally one partner's nature draws in the other.

3

Tara

Birth star (Nakshatra) compatibility and health/longevity prospects. The 27 Nakshatras are counted from the bride's Nakshatra to the groom's and divided by 9 to determine auspiciousness.

4

Yoni

Sexual compatibility and intimacy. Each Nakshatra is associated with one of 14 animals, and compatibility is determined by the natural relationship between those animals (friendly, neutral, or hostile).

5

Graha Maitri

Friendship between the ruling planets of each person's moon sign. This Koota examines mental compatibility, shared interests, and emotional attunement between partners.

6

Gana

Temperament and disposition. Nakshatras are classified into three Ganas: Deva (divine), Manushya (human), and Rakshasa (demonic). Compatibility is highest between same-Gana pairs.

7

Bhakoot

Emotional and relational compatibility, wealth, and family prosperity. Determined by the relationship between moon signs, this is one of the highest-weighted Kootas and heavily influences life quality and longevity.

8

Nadi

Health, genetics, and progeny compatibility. The most heavily weighted Koota. Nakshatras are divided into three Nadis: Aadi, Madhya, and Antya. Matching Nadis (same for both) is considered inauspicious and scores 0.

What does a score of 28/36 mean?

A score of 28 or higher is widely regarded as highly compatible. It means the couple scores well across most Kootas, with particular alignment in the higher-weighted ones like Nadi, Bhakoot, and Gana. It suggests complementary temperaments, compatible health prospects, and strong emotional attunement.

Scores between 18 and 27 are considered acceptable, and the relationship can thrive with awareness of the areas of friction. Scores below 18 are generally viewed as challenging, and traditional practice would suggest caution or seeking a pandit's guidance.

It's worth noting that Guna Milan is one input, not a verdict. Many couples with modest scores have highly successful marriages, and a high score doesn't guarantee happiness. The system is a tool for reflection, not a final answer.

Mangal Dosha: what it is and when it matters

Mangal Dosha (also called Manglik Dosha) arises when Mars is placed in the 1st, 2nd, 4th, 7th, 8th, or 12th house of the birth chart. It's traditionally associated with difficulties in relationships and is one of the most commonly discussed factors in matrimonial screening.

Traditional guidance suggests that two Manglik individuals are compatible with each other, as the dosha cancels out. There are also several cancellation conditions (e.g., Mars in its own sign, Mars aspected by Jupiter) that a qualified Jyotishi can assess. Katha flags Mangal Dosha on profiles to make this information visible upfront.

How Katha uses Guna Milan

When you create a profile on Katha and provide your birth details, we compute your full North Indian Kundli, including all 12 Rashi placements and your Janma Nakshatra. When you browse matches, the Guna Milan score is computed in real time and displayed on every profile card.

Tapping into a match's profile shows the full Ashtakoota breakdown: each Koota, your individual score, and the maximum possible. This gives you and your family everything needed to make an informed, tradition-grounded decision without needing to consult a separate astrologer for every match you consider.
